Whale Rider - Review

The scene which Koro (Rawiri Paratene) is teaching the Maori dance, Haka, to the students is amazing: "show the thumb means I've gone to eat you". In the beginning, Paikea (Keisha Castle-Hughes) tells about the first-born descendent who is going to be a chief, someone to be loved. However, Porourangi (Cliff Curtis) decided to study arts abroad, leaving behind his 'obligations' with his people, maybe because he wasn't born to this role. It's funny to see his brother, Rawiri (Grant Roa), living in the traditional Maori costumes, but he is the second-born.

The love of Koro (Rawiri Paratene) by his grand-daughter, Paikea, is in the best hypothesis, unfair. How could he love so much her, and, suddenly, with no reason, change totally this feeling? However, Paikea has a strong mind to struggle against all the problems she had. She showed us to believe in our instincts and dreams.

For me, it's a five star movie. Not because the wonderful pictures, or the famous NZ casting. What I most like is the music, which follows the intensity of the scenes. Although we can predict the happy end, the movie always surprises us, and develops the plot in a clever and astonished way.
